Wellington Restaurants

The Matterhorn, Wellington

Whether the choice is for Asian Fusion, Mediterranean, European, and local New Zealand cuisine, the city of Wellington has a wide selection of perfect dining establishments to suit the most discriminating palate. Wellington restaurants are known to be the best in New Zealand, and the popular recipients of prestigious culinary awarding bodies like the Cuisine NZ Restaurant of the Year Awards. In 2010, seven of its local restaurants were singled out as contenders for this prestigious top award. Three of the seven finalists are listed below.

Matterhorn
The Matterhorn has been cited as the 12th Best Bar and Restaurant by the Australian Bartender Magazine and the winner of the 2008 Supreme Award by the Cuisine NZ Restaurant of the Year. Although the restaurant is in the high end range, the high standard of service, delightful ambiance and the food quality and taste justifies the price. Located in hip Cuba Street, the cuisine served in the Matterhorn is predominantly influenced by New Zealand and Pacific flavors.

Red Ginger
The Red Ginger in Wellington Central features lunch and dining selections with a strong Asian culinary influence. The restaurant creates a visual and palate pleaser by mixing traditional Asian cooking with more modern and contemporary flavors, and adding a little western vibe in the décor. For a superb list of menu selections, the price range is surprisingly lower than expected.

The Ambeli
The Ambeli serves pan Mediterranean and Greek, as well as Italian and Spanish cuisine. Price range is a little more expensive but deservedly so, after receiving a “Best Neighborhood Restaurant” and “Restaurant Personality” award from Cuisine Magazine. Located in Mt. Victoria, the Ambeli takes pride in using only organic produce sourced out from local suppliers. Although they have an outstanding set menu, the restaurant offers seasonal menus utilizing only the freshest seasonal produce.
